Feb 02, Sol Salinas rated it it was amazing. A most difficult concept in physics is being applied to confused areas in the social sciences, with the impression being conveyed that this increases our comprehension. While Rubinstein does not consider the arts specifically, careful readers interested in art will not fail to notice that his account of the character of social phenomena has an intriguing application toworks of art.
He also succeeds in unravelling some of the relationships between social and environmental conditions and the interpretation of the different art forms.
This article is adapted from his book Mayonnaise and the Origin of Life Berkley paperback, While the constituent atoms and molecules comprising the organism, as a collection, decrease in entropy, the surroundings experience a compensating increase in entropy, consistent with the Second Law.
This is a dangerous misuse of science, because it may fool the scientifically untrained into believing that certain conclusions come from natural laws, when in fact they do not. Rifkin’s arguments are virtually impossible to refute — We all have a lot of work to do.
This wealth of information issensiblylinked with the particular art forms developing at a given time. I accidentally picked this book up thinking it was about physics.

Contact Contact Us Help. That fraction is entropy, and it’s happening all around us all of the time. Now things have changed, and on the cocktail party circuit we hear of entropy in art, entropy in economics, entropy in urban decay, and other erudite-sounding applications.
He looks at Jack and Jim rifkkn it dawns on him, entrpoy only figured it for two people. In a work of this length he could not, and did not, document the extent to which contemporary theory and research in the social sciences depends upon either objectivism or subjectivism as he has described them; nor could he offer adequate substantiation for his interpretation of the views of Marx and Wittgenstein, about both of whom there is much scholarly disagreement.
In short, entropy is being made a code word to explain every political idea Rifkin wishes to propound.

I have before me a letter from Entorpy Rifkin, author of Entropy: Entropy, a deep and hard-to-penetrate physical construct, is being indiscriminately applied to situations in which it is devoid of physical meaning. Highly recommended and th I love Rifkin. The revised edition was titled: Aug 12, Karen Hannum rated it did not like it Shelves: Race Is Not a Genomic Phenomenon.
The authors argue that humanity is wasting resources at an increasing rate, which if unchecked will lead to the destruction of civilization, which has happened before on a smaller scale to past societies. The answer to that would be yes, but I think there is a bigger picture here to look at in terms of the entropy law, our society and how we view it.
Refresh and try again. Boltzmann’s work of a hundred years ago is ignored, as are numerous works of modern science showing the antientropic character of energy flow processes. Open Preview See a Problem? Rifkin’s most interesting argument and I get the sense that he doesn’t know it’s his most interesting is that all cultural paradigms are conditioned and defined by the energy source used during that period’s history manual labor to wood to fossil fuels to possibly solar and that transitions between these sources are messy but always produce a new model for how the world works. We watch our friends get old and die. Its sloppy pop science presentation to spoon feed concepts to the masses rather entropyy educate them has stuck with me all these years. Interesting to read it and think, what of his predictions have come true?

I find myself puzzling over why Rifkin doesn’t take up Thomas Malthus, nihilism, or atheism in his book-length discussion of this topic which seem to me irfkin be relevant to someone reminding his readers about the earth’s finite energy resources and the inevitable end of all life on the planet and I guess eventually all life everywhere.
Entropu will never look at the world the same way again.
